This lecture tells a story dating from 1858 and preserved in the Egyptian National Archives. The story is of a slave called Sultan, and how he was killed by a bey working in a princely estate. The lecture follows the details of the case to illustrate the intricate mechanism by which Egypt was transformed from a family estate to a modern state.
This conversation with Youssef El Chazli was published din Mada Masr on 8 June 2019 Khaled Fahmy, who holds the Sultan Qaboos bin Said chair in modern Arabic studies at the University of Cambridge, has worked tirelessly to scrutinize and reevaluate dominant narratives and historical assumptions about the Egyptian state and its many institutions.
